I start to get ready for a very long weekend, right as the rain pours down. It’s rush weekend, and I knew at that moment, this weekend was going to feel ten times longer. This past weekend was the start of rushing a sorority, and it was a long three days. My roommate and I began the weekend opening our closet doors, looking at all of the clothes inside, then going to our hallmates to find an outfit that would work. Before I knew it, I was standing in line waiting to enter the first house of the open house round. I didn’t know what to expect, and I stood in line anxious, nervous, and excited for what was to come. As the leaders began to count down, everyone in line started wondering what was about to happen. The leaders blew the whistle, the doors flew open, and the chants began.
I didn’t really know what to expect for rush. My cousins and my aunt both rushed and have told me so many stories about their experiences, but I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like at JMU. The first two days I got to see what each house was like, which was fun for me because I really had no idea what each chapter was like. I ended up losing my voice after the second day because it was so loud in each house I had to yell just to have a conversation. The second round felt like it lasted for days, mainly because of the cold and the rain. We would have to stand in lines for what felt like forever, (although it was probably just 15 minutes) and the time spent inside the houses flew by. Thankfully, my leader had a zip up tent we could sit under with blankets as we waited for the next round to begin.
At the end of each day my feet hurt, I was extremely hungry, and so exhausted. However, I also had a lot of fun throughout all of the rounds, and look forward to this weekend- hopefully it doesn’t get canceled because of the hurricane.
Sounds like a lot of fun! I unfortunately missed the deadline to rush, but I am thinking about rushing next semester. My hall mates are going through the same thing. If the hurricane does hit I hope it cancels the classes!

I went through the same thing. The weekend was cold and rainy so it definitely made the rushing experience brutal. I agree that it was fun at the same time because of all the people we got to meet from each sorority. It was interesting seeing who was in each house. Fingers crossed that it doesn’t get moved!

It sounds like rushing is a lot of work! I wanted to rush, but honestly it is just very intimidating to me. I see my self as a pretty outgoing person but not when I’m forced to try to get a bunch of girls to like me. I want to eventually join one either the the spring semester to next year. I hope you find a sorority that fits you!!
